Biografia
Samuel Roa Mejia, known artistically as “Leumas Roa”, was born in Irapuato, Mexico on December 18, 1970. He spent his childhood and youth in his country completing compulsory education, attending a technical high school and, subsequently, two years of Computer Engineering. At 21, he joined a non-profit Catholic organization that took him to Africa in 1994 – for three years – as an intern, first in Zambia then in Tanzania. Between 1991 and 2000, first in Mexico and then in England, he obtained Bachelor of Arts degrees in Philosophy and Theology, respectively at the Conciliar Institute of Querétaro (Mexico) and at Middlesex University in London. Since 2001, he has lived, worked, and maintained his studio in Italy.
From childhood, he cultivated a passion for pencil drawing and the study of perspective, actively participating in artistic activities and workshops at various schools he attended. As a self-taught artist, he participated in several school and local competitions and then continued with the experience of oil painting, following the advice of the master Luis Manuel Roa, a Mexican artist. During his stay in Africa, he was able to employ his artistic skills in decorating churches by painting walls, both with “murals” and with elements and forms drawn from the local culture.
In recent years, he has begun a journey of experimentation and exploration through the development of mixed-technique works, in which painting and sculpture are placed in dialogue, and which have been exhibited in numerous collective exhibitions. Among them, the seventh (2022/2023), eight (2023) and ninth (2025) editions of the New Renaissance Festival, the International Art Exhibition “The Colors of Beauty” (2025) and “Being Project” (2026). His first important solo exhibition, “Between mind and heart. Balances and metamorphoses of the human being” (Leonardo Da Vinci Art Expo Center, Milan, 15/06-2/08, 4-7/09 – curated by Luca Siniscalco), took place in 2023, followed in 2024 by “To evolve. Beyond the surface, emotions” (Exhibition space “Gesa Vegia”, Ronco Briantino (MB), 30/11-15/12), and in 2025, “Pencil and colors, cries and silences”, a solo exhibition of pencil drawings (Spazio Aperto, Osnago (LC), 31/01-8/02).
Testo critico

The art of Leumas Roa can be understood precisely as an aesthetic exploration of our relationship with the experience of radical doubt: doubt concerning the meaning of existence, future expectations, and the disintegration of traditional values that characterises contemporary society. For the artist, however, doubt is never an end in itself, but rather a dynamic, liminal threshold around which reflection takes place and from which the journey towards the Beyond begins. The power of art lies precisely in its visionary and anti-nihilistic potential: its ability to offer viewers possible solutions – perhaps utopian, yet always imbued with creative and imaginative insights.
In “Seeing Beyond”, existential doubt leads to a fundamental discovery: the child within us – here depicted in the guise of an angel, a spiritual being whom the ancient Greeks identified as a daimon – is the true driving force of each individual’s life.
The elderly man, painted in black and white and blindfolded, alludes to the material and biological dimension of human existence, which finds its very soul in the inner child: that “fanciullino” (the little child within) immortalised in the verses of the poet Giovanni Pascoli:
“Within us there is a little child who not only shivers […] but has tears and exultations of his own. When we are still young, he mingles his voice with ours, and of the two children who tumble and quarrel together, yet always share their fears, hopes, joys and tears, only one heartbeat can be heard, one single cry and whimper. But then we grow older, while he remains small; […] It is not the gravity of age that prevents us from hearing the little voice of the child within; on the contrary, perhaps it invites us and helps us, as the surrounding clamour fades, to listen to it in the half-light of the soul. And if the eyes with which we look upon the world beyond ourselves can no longer see, then the old man sees only through those great eyes that dwell within him”.
