Testo critico

In his depiction of the square — the beating heart of the city — Matteo Boato develops a highly personal spatial poetics. Within this setting, poised between dream and reality, graphite and impasto painting become tools for exploring the human condition and the fundamental need for connection that binds all living beings.

The square takes on a symbolic role, highlighting otherness through a dense interplay of shadows, material depth, and paint drips across the surface. The work unfolds in multiple layers, carefully balancing mark-making and color to tell timeless stories about human nature and the cycles of life. It is within this sense of suspension that the square becomes a space for existential inquiry, inhabiting an ambiguous realm poised between the weight of reality and the lightness of imagination.

The interplay of shadows, volumes and paint drippings creates a tension between the visible and the invisible, presence and absence, definition and indeterminacy. The complexity of human relationships and the layered nature of the material evoke the uncertainty and multiplicity of the human condition.

Our need to connect with others also entails embracing what we do not know and cannot fully comprehend. Every encounter remains a mystery, yet its many prismatic facets open up a space for serendipity and the unexpected, in the ongoing, inexhaustible process of discovering ourselves through others.
