Biografia
Born in Ravenna in 1960, where he still lives and works, Mauro Masetti is a self-taught artist. His journey into art began unexpectedly, sparked by an ending. Without consciously choosing it, he found himself applying color to any surface that came to hand. In that spontaneous act, he discovered a profound sense of peace and wonder—so much so that painting soon became a daily necessity. His artistic practice revolves around a deep exploration of color, material, and form, which have become integral to his everyday life. Drawn to abstract and informal art, he resonates with these movements as they reflect his inner world and creative essence.
Masetti has been featured for several years in the Catalogo Arte Moderna published by G. Mondadori, the 2018 Contemporary Art Yearbook, and other prestigious art catalogs. His work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across Italy and abroad. He has participated in multiple editions of the New Renaissance Festival, including Lucca 2018 at Villa Bottini and Raffaello 500 at the stunning Villa Tittoni in Desio (MB) during the 2020 festival. In 2022, he took part in the competition-exhibition Nel mezzo del cammin… tra guerra e pace, earning an Honorable Mention from the Jury of Excellence. A permanent artist at the Centro Leonardo da Vinci – Art Expo, Masetti held his solo exhibition L’Altro Mondo (The Other World) in 2024 at the same venue, receiving widespread acclaim from both critics and the public.
In 2025, he exhibited in the show “The Colors of Beauty” as part of the Chase4Beauty Days by Cosnova Italia, an event held in collaboration with the association Verso un Nuovo Rinascimento within the framework of Milan’s Fuorisalone. In the same year, he also took part in the New Renaissance Festival in Germignana, on Lake Maggiore, hosted at the former Eliotherapeutic Colony.
Testo critico

With this original work, Mauro Masetti ventures into figurative painting in a new and unexpected direction. His brush captures the outcome of a dreamlike intuition: a humanoid creature whose ambiguous appearance seems to embody the contradictions of our time.
Turquoise and orange dominate the canvas, creating a striking chromatic contrast and a sense of disorientation. Amidst marks and translucent layers of paint, touches of black seem to scratch at the pictorial surface, heightening the subject’s bewilderment. The figure’s expression is perplexed and unsettled. Echoes of Modigliani are evident not only in the elongated neck but also in the figure’s pale, vacant eyes, which stand out against the turquoise face, seemingly devoid of any fixed point of focus. The black hair is rendered through a textured, broken brushstroke. It is enlivened by blue highlights that animate it and accentuate the color contrast with the face.
Masetti’s art serves both as a barometer of the inner self and as a litmus test of the world around us. Nothing human is alien to it, echoing Terence’s celebrated words: “I am human, and I consider nothing human foreign to me.” His lucid dreamlike vision captures the present through a meditation that, while clear-eyed and free from embellishment, is never cynical or resigned.
Here, the choice of figurative language lends itself to a portrait painted in vivid, complementary hues: a visual exploration of contemporary humanity’s uncertainty when confronted with questions too great to grasp, giving rise to bewilderment and paralysis. Reality is portrayed in all its complexity, acknowledging its difficulties while seeking to discern its positive aspects as well. The result is a dialogue between light and shadow, which gives the work its title. Yet the subject’s slanting mouth, defined by a sharp stroke of red, betrays an underlying tension, revealing an unease that remains unresolved.
