Testo critico

Luca Siniscalco

A dreamlike and enveloping atmosphere emanates from this canvas, whose subject dates back to 1981-82, when Jacquounain produced a series of watercolours exploring the same theme, revealing her profound fascination with this imagery.

The compositional space of the work is harmoniously structured around a binary arrangement: a curtain divides the realm of day from that of night – mirror images of an urban cosmos in transformation. “Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night” (Edgar Allan Poe, “Eleonora”). Jacquounain ventures into the realms of daydreaming, revealing the magical power of art and its captivating, enchanting allure.

The canvas also showcases her distinctive style: a personal reinterpretation of the artistic legacies of Cubism, Surrealism and Metaphysical Art.
